Traditional Japanese Sweets Shop Known for Dorayaki: ichiya Tokyo Mizumachi Store

The Gate Hotel Ryogoku distributes a map of the Sumida River attractions to guests staying at the hotel. The map has been well received by both joggers and non-joggers, who use it as a strolling map.

We would like to introduce ichiya, a Japanese confectionery store located in Tokyo Mizumachi, one of the recommended spots on the map.

Tokyo Mizumachi

Tokyo Mizumachi is a unique area that combines a park with commercial facilities along the river. It includes restaurants, cafes, a laundry, a bouldering gym, and other stores. From The Gate Hotel Ryogoku, it is a 25-minute walk along the Sumida River. It is a good place to stop by when visiting Asakusa or the Sky Tree®.

ichiya Tokyo Mizumachi Store

The store is marked by the “ichi” kanji curtain in front of it.

ichiya is a Japanese confectionary shop with its main store in Hikifune (Higashi Mukojima), a local area, which opened in June 2020 in conjunction with the opening of Tokyo Mizumachi.

The shop is famous for its dorayaki and daifuku, both carefully handmade one by one, and are so popular that long lines form on weekends. Both are made with rare, high-grade large Hokkaido-grown Houshu red beans, which are known for their gentle sweetness and can be eaten without getting tired of them.

Popular products are a wide variety of Dorayaki

Dorayaki is very popular. Some items are nearly sold out in the afternoon.

This time, we tried the seasonal Strawberry Dorayaki with Fresh Cream and Green Tea Cream Dorayaki. The strawberry dorayaki had large fresh strawberries, and the combination of fresh cream and sweet red bean paste was exquisite. The matcha cream dorayaki was filled with kanoko-mame, beans from Dainagon produced in Tanba, and the fluffy matcha cream was very satisfying and filling.

Strawberry dorayaki and green tea cream dorayaki. The size is about the same as a fist and is easy to eat.

Their daifuku also looks delicious!

This shop’s daifuku is just as popular as dorayaki. Daifuku rice cakes are made from Shiga Habutae mochi, a type of mochi rice produced in Shiga Prefecture. All of the Japanese sweets carefully arranged in the showcase look delicious, and many customers seem to find themselves reaching for several products. The store’s relaxing appearance and simple color scheme may also be a reason for its popularity.

The shop offers a limited menu depending on the season, such as cherry blossom rice cakes in spring, shaved ice in summer, o-hagi in fall, and strawberry daifuku and zenzai in winter, so customers can enjoy the shop as often as they like without getting burnout on the same products. There is also an eat-in space, but since take-out is also available, we recommend that you enjoy your meal while relaxing in Sumida Park in front of the restaurant.

Although it is a bit far from The Gate Hotel Ryogoku, please stop by for a snack on your way to Sky Tree or Asakusa from Ryogoku, or on a break from jogging.
