Traditional Kyoto Cuisine at Tankuma Kitamise Kyoto Main Store

What to eat in Kyoto

One of the pleasures of a trip to Kyoto is the food, which is unique to the city. Breakfast is usually served at your accommodation, but it is also fun to plan what, when, and where to eat, for lunch, dinner, as well as sweets, and snacks at cafes, while considering your sightseeing route and budget.

Kyoto, in particular, is characterized by its rich culinary culture nurtured by its history. Kyoto ryori, or Kyoto-style cuisine, includes both formal kaiseki cuisine and vegetarian dishes, as well as more traditional obanzai, or side dishes, each born from a different background and handed down to the present day. Kyoto’s four seasons have nurtured an abundance of ingredients and dishes unique to Kyoto, such as Kyoto vegetables, yuba (bean curd), yudofu (tofu), and hamo (pike conger eel).

If you are in Kyoto and would like to enjoy a Kyoto-style meal, take the plunge and enjoy the richness of Kyoto’s cuisine at a delicious long-established restaurant.

Tankuma Kitamise Kyoto Main Store, a long-established kappo restaurant recommended by us

Tankuma Kitamise Kyoto Honten is located a 2-minute walk from The Gate Hotel Kyoto Takasegawa.

“Tankuma was established in 1928 on the banks of the Takase River in Kyoto, which is famous for its tugboats. In the Edo period, the Takasegawa-suji area was a place where Ikusu restaurants serving seasonal river fish were established, and we, Tankuma Kitamise, have continued to devote ourselves to such traditions ever since.”

The famous suppon round hot pot

Founded in 1928, Tankuma Kitamise is one of the oldest Kyoto cuisine restaurants with a history of over 90 years and is a restaurant that has inherited the tradition of sincerity and seasonal elegance based on the philosophy of “providing true hospitality with a once-in-a-lifetime experience”. Based on the philosophy of the restaurant’s predecessor that “there is nothing Japanese food can’t do,” the restaurant also offers fugu (blowfish) and suppon (soft-shelled turtle) dishes, which require specialized cooking techniques.

The restaurant was born as a counter kappo restaurant, but now it is equipped with private rooms where you can enjoy the cuisine at your leisure. The counter seating allows diners to enjoy each dish while conversing with the chef and watching the artisanal skills unfold before their eyes. In the private rooms, where you can enjoy kaiseki cuisine in the privacy of your own family or friends, lunch box lunches start at 4,400 yen, and dinner courses start at 19,360 yen.

The restaurant is not large, they have only seven counter seats and six private rooms, so reservations are recommended. If you are staying at The Gate Hotel Kyoto Takasegawa, our hotel can also assist you with reservations.

Now, when you make a reservation to dine at Tankuma Kitamise Restaurant, please mention that you saw The Gate Hotel’s website, and you will receive a box (6 pieces) of Tankuma Kitamise Restaurant’s popular mame daifuku for every two people.
<Please contact the restaurant directly for reservations.

(Reservations can also be made at the hotel for guests who plan to stay overnight.)
