In business for 95 years: A restaurant loved by the locals
Asakusa Mugitoro’s main branch is located not far from The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon. Although it opens at 11:00 a.m., a line begins to form in front of the restaurant around 10:30 a.m., populated by many regulars. Once you try it, you are bound to want to taste it again.
In Japan, yams have been eaten since the Heian period (794-1192) and have been called “mountain eels” and “mountain medicine” in Chinese medicine. The yam we usually eat may have a strong image of being a side dish but at this restaurant, the yam is the star of the show. They serve yam dishes in the hopes of making yam an everyday food.

When the restaurant was founded, tsukune imo (Japanese yam) was used, but today, domestically produced yam is used. It is characterized by its low acumen and strong stickiness. The thick and flavorful yam with secret broth, a recipe that has been kept unchanged since 1929, can be enjoyed at Asakusa Mugitoro.
Asakusa Mugitoro offers two popular lunch buffets: the weekday-only Mugitoro Buffet (1,500 yen) on the first floor and the Tenku Tororo Buffet (3,300 yen) on the rooftop floor. The Tenku Tororo Buffet includes not only tororo but also a wide variety of side dishes. You will enjoy the unexpected combination of yam and side dishes.

Tantalize your taste buds while enjoying the view of the Sumida River and the Sky Tree.
This time, we went to Lounge Vista “Tororo Buffet in the Sky” on the roof of Asakusa Mugitoro’s main branch. Outside the window is a beautiful view of the Sumida River and Tokyo Sky Tree. Time passes by in a way that is typical of Asakusa.

Here, you can enjoy the Tororo Buffet in the Sky (80-minute buffet). Lined up on the buffet board are two types of yam, seasoned yam and miso yam, barley rice, curry rice, pork stew, gratin, and numerous side dishes. You can have all of these as much or as little as you like.

I immediately poured the yam over the barley rice. The yam has a heavyweight and a strong stickiness. The rich aroma of the yam is very fragrant.
Seasoned Tororo based on bonito and kelp dashi, and Miso Tororo made with red miso, white miso, and barley miso, both go well with rice and have an irresistible taste.

What is your favorite tororo arrangement?
The barley rice served here is carefully cooked in a formula that goes well with the tororo, making it a perfect match for the tororo, but what you should definitely try is a fascinating collaboration with something other than barley rice.
The beef tenderloin curry rice and grated yam is a dish that continues to attract fans who visit the restaurant. The spicy curry and the mild and mellow taste of the yam create an exquisite harmony.

It also goes great with stewed pork cubes, beef steaks, and noodles. Tororo dressing goes well with salads. You will be surprised at the depth of flavor that can be created by adding grated yam.

No wonder many who visit the restaurant discover new ways to enjoyed grated yam.

After enjoying your meal, be sure to stop by the souvenir corner on the first floor. You will find tea soba noodles with yams, seasonal sponge cakes, yokan (bean jelly), and more. I had the “Graduates Lemon Castella with Yamaimo,” which is sold only during the season, and it had a fluffy texture and an elegant and delicate taste with flavorful lemon peel from the Seto Inland Sea. The cute packaging makes it a perfect gift. I recommend it as a souvenir from Asakusa.

Asakusa Mugitoro provides new ways to enjoy this yam. You will feel the new possibilities for traditional food. Be sure to enjoy it when you are in the area.
